A Tie Guide for Women

Sunday, June 26, 2011
Although the majority of neckties are worn by men, there are some occasions when a woman does wear a man’s tie. Just yesterday we received an e-mail where a woman asked as for advice on how to best wear a tie – a question we actually get asked quite often. So, we at Ties-Necktie.com did some research and compiled this little Woman’s Tie Guide.

When Does a Woman Wear a Tie
In most cases a woman will wear a tie as part of a job uniform. Especially the restaurant and hotel industry is known for women to occasionally wear ties. Other industries are Airlines, catering services, transportation, security & protection services, and more.

Tips for Women to Wear Ties
Almost all ties are made for men – meaning that the length of the tie will fit a man’s body. On average men are taller and have a larger neck size than women. If you add your height (in inches) to your neck size (in inches) and this number is larger or equal to 76 inches then you should have no problem tying a man’s tie. If the number falls below 76 then chances are that the narrow end of the tie will dangle below the wide end of the tie. If this is the case then here are a few tips:

  1. Tie a Larger Knot
The larger the knot the more of the tie’s length is needed to tie it. Knots like the double Windsor or the Prince Albert will take an extra inch or two. The down-side: The knot can be too big looking disproportionate to your face and neck-size.
  2. Hide the Narrow End
If your height and neck size added together falls below 76 inches then chances are that the narrow end will show. Tying a larger tie knot may also not be a good option since it may look disproportionate to your face and neck size. If this sounds familiar then simply tug the narrow end in between two shirt buttons.
  3. Cut to Fit
If both options above do not work then take a pair of scissors and cut off a few inches from the narrow end. Make sure to seal the cut with a sewing machine to avoid fraying and to ensure that the tie’s inlay stays in place.

If none of these options work then we suggest you get in touch with the person that is in charge of the uniform. Ask if the tie can be exchanged for a matching scarf or if there is the option to create a custom length tie. We at Ties-Necktie.com regularly outfit companies with uniform neckwear. We do offer matching women’s scarves and we also give our customers the option for custom designs and sizing. For more information send us an e-mail or give us a call. We look forward hearing from you.
