The Ins and Outs on Tuxedo Rentals

Sunday, June 26, 2011
Often men are baffled about how to go about renting a tuxedo. Renting a tux is a wise move if you only wish to wear the tuxedo once or twice. Remember renting a tux is no small affair. It costs between $60-$120, almost a quarter the actual price of purchasing an entire black tie outfit. Therefore, if black tie functions are a common invitation in your social circles, then go out and buy your own. If not, then below is everything you need to know about renting a tuxedo.

Understand the time frame
As a general rule it is almost always smart to research beforehand and reserve your tux at least two to three months in advance. Prom season is very hectic and all the popular items of clothing will be vanishing off the shelves before you know it; and more traditional events such as weddings require a lot of thought beforehand as it is one of the biggest days of your life. In addition, you need to allow at least 1-2 weeks to fit and tailor your tux.

If you have decided to buy your own tux then we suggest you purchase your ensembel in the "off-season" - meaning past prom or wedding season. Prices will be lower while at the same time you will have much more choices in styles and sizes. A great time to buy a tux is from August through October.

Understand the Occasion
Read the invitation carefully. If it reads "strickly black tie" then keep you outfit classic and conservative. If it says "black tie optional" then it would even be acceptable to go in dark colored suit and necktie instead of formal tuxedo. Also important is the time of the day. Black tie functions during the day and/or warmer climates are referred to "warm weather black tie" and allow you to swap your black dinner jacket for a more comfortable white one. Finally, if you were going along with a partner or a date ask her what she’s wearing and you could pick out something that compliments her.

Understand Your Budget
For a convenient budget based tuxedo you shouldn’t be looking to pay more than $200$ - $300, however a high, quality end tuxedo starts at $500 and goes into the thousands; of course depending on the brand/designer.

Research Using the Internet
There is no need to spend hours walking from one men's clothier to the next. Instead do some research from the convenience and comfort from your home. Search online for style choices, get an idea on pricing, look for sales, and even order online. Should you decide to order online make sure you know your sizing. In addition, check the retailers return policy. How long do you have to make a return? Are there restocking fees? Do you have to pay for the return shipping? All these are things you should consider before ordering online.

Time to Meet an Expert
Should you decide to rent/buy your tux at a store (recommended) then research which retailer is best. Read reviews on Yelp, call the store to find out about style and sizing options, and so on. Once you know where to go, set up an appointment.
