The messages have little chance of inspiring protests in China, whose one-party government has established many censorship controls and where citizens have limited access to foreign Web pages due to a firewall that censors the pages.
But Hu at a meeting attended by top leaders of the Communist Party, said that despite rising prosperity, China is faced with deep social conflicts that would test the Communist Party’s ability to maintain firm control.
Hu made no mention of the protests, promoted by the Internet, which have rocked authoritarian governments in the Middle East and overthrew the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Yes, said Chinese officials had to deal with the “virtual society” in his nation, which has about 450 million Internet users.
“Today, our country has an important strategic window for development, but also in a period of social conflicts magnified,” Hu said during a meeting at the Central Party School in the northwest of Beijing, where he trains future leaders.
Among the measures that Beijing has had to take to offset those risks, said Hu, an era of “greater strength and greater control over the Internet, improving the standard of management of the virtual society and establish mechanisms to guide public opinion online “.
Hu’s request comes at a time when messages are spread abroad urging China to hold meetings on Sunday to demand radical democratic reforms inspired by the “Jasmine Revolution” in the Middle East.
“Launching a political reform and ending one-party dictatorship, the press release to get free news,” said a message proposing meetings in thirteen Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.
The calls show that the Chinese government, which dominates the largest population of Internet users in the world, is afraid of losing control of the communication on the Net.
