Easy Scalloped Potatoes with Ham
Ingredients
- 12 oz baked ham, ¼'' sliced
- 4 russet potatoes, peeled & thinly sliced
- 3½ tablespoons butter, room temperature
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups cheddar cheese, grated
- 1½ cups milk
- Salt and black pepper, for taste
First we preheat the oven at 350ยบ F and grease a baking dish with ½ tablespoon butter. In a pan, we will melt 1½ tablespoons butter on medium heat. Make sure butter doesn't turn brown. So before that, add the flour and cook it for a minute or till you can smell the flour. Take the pan off the stove and add the milk in. Keep whisking the ingredients and when everything is combined properly, bring the pan back on the stove and let it simmer as you stir. Once the mixture turns thick, again remove from the stove and add salt and black pepper as per your taste. Keep the pan aside and now we work on the onions. Take another pan to cook the onions in 1½ tablespoon butter. When the onions are golden brown, season them with salt and black pepper.
Now we go back to the sauce mixture we made. Pour some of the mixture in the baking dish and then add the sliced potatoes on top. Spread the onions along with slices of ham and then the cheese. Keep making layers and in the end, sprinkle more cheddar cheese to cover. Place the dish inside the oven and bake for about 45 minutes. When the cheese becomes golden and begins to bubble, remove the baking dish, and serve hot. Your easy scalloped potatoes and ham dish is ready.
